5 things to know before you try Pilates

  1. What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise that aims to strengthen muscles, specifically the core, as well as improve postural alignment and flexibility. It is suitable for all bodies and can help improve movement in a functional and graceful way. The method is typically taught with precision and links your breath to your movement in a way that creates a mind to body connection.

  2. We recommend a Private Session first.

If you have never done Pilates we highly recommend you schedule a private session first as it is the best way to ensure you understand how to use the equipment as well as get tailored information regarding alignment, movement and form. If you have a current injury or anything that restricts movement we require at least one private before transitioning to classes.

  3. What to expect:

Pilates is a unique form of exercise, and there are many subtleties built into the method that keep it engaging as you deepen your practice. If you are a fitness enthusiast, you might not “feel sore” after your first session, as it is not designed to make you feel overly fatigued or defeated. You will, though, feel taller, stronger and more connected to your body, and this sensation develops the more you practice Pilates. For those who are new to exercise or coming back from an extended break, you might feel muscles you have never felt before, specifically those that make up your core (abdominals, obliques, back, and hip muscles).

  4. What classes to transition to first

After you take your initial private session we always recommend to start with a Reformer Foundations class first. This is our level 1 class that focuses on Pilates Principles and is taught at a moderate pace. Also, we offer a Restorative Reformer class that is great for those who are new and might be working with an injury. After building more strength and awareness, Reformer Flow is a great all levels class to join from there.

  5. Communicating your injuries, concerns and goals:

Before coming in for your first session, whether it is a class or a private, we request that you email us with specifics regarding injuries, goals, or concerns that you might have. Our classes are small enough where our teachers can make individual modifications for those who might need a little extra help or refrain from performing certain movements. Communication is key when it comes to making the most out of your sessions.
